One of the small complaints I have for living in Dallas is that oftentimes, I feel like there isn’t a whole heck of a lot to do besides going out to bars or restaurants.
I blame myself (partly) for this because there’s no way I’m stepping foot on a trail or park in the dead of summer in Texas. Blech.
That being said, there are some pretty fantastic places to go if you’re wanting to cool off from the heat, drink a yummy cocktail, and/or eat some delicious food. One of my favorite things is discovering places I’ve never been to before and loving them enough to want to go back and take friends and family with me.
This summer, I was introduced to five restaurants and bars that I absolutely loved. There’s a little bit for everyone from Deep Ellum to Plano.
Check them out!
Holy-Moly. Sixty Vines is a new-ish restaurant on the edge of Dallas and Plano. It’s a wine on tap restaurant. Wine. On. Tap. The food is delicious and focused on the cuisine of wine country, the wine is poured fresh from the tap, and the ambiance is comfortable and friendly. Jimmy and I visited last weekend, and we will definitely be back!
Dot’s Hop House and Cocktail Courtyard
Dot’s is located in Deep Ellum, and it is a really neat place. Yes, I will admit, most of the seating is outside, but they have large trees to provide shade. Even I, the one who panics when her body registers a certain high temperature, did not mind the outdoor seating. With over 100 beers on tap, great cocktails, and well-made food that goes beyond your typical bar eats, Dot’s is the perfect place to enjoy an afternoon or evening with friends. There’s also a GIANT chandelier in the middle of the outdoor courtyard. If the numerous craft beers aren't enough to tempt you, go check out the shiny crystals.
Ooh-eee, I love southern inspired cooking. And Ida Claire does it magnificently. Located in Addison, this eclectic restaurant offers yummy brunch, lunch, and dinner. Their cocktails are fabulous, and they have a great beer selection. From shrimp and grits to chicken and waffles to fried green tomatoes, it’s all good. Really good.
Mexican Sugar is brought to you by the same team that gave us the delicious Whiskey Cake and Velvet Taco. From those credentials alone, you know Mexican Sugar is going to be great. It’s located in the Shops of Legacy in Plano, but if you live in Dallas (like me), I can attest that it’s worth the drive. The food is not your traditional Tex-Mex but has a Latin American flare. The ambiance is stylish yet comfortable, with miss-matched chairs and lit candles throughout. Try the Hibiscus Margarita (named DFW’s best margarita in 2015) and the shrimp tacos. Both were heavenly!
I was introduced to this fun, rustic bar and restaurant when the writing group I’m a part of met up for a happy hour to wish one of our members farewell (miss you, Jillian). Armoury D.E. is the type of place where you can honestly say the bartenders are artists. The cocktails are out of this world. The food menu has many different options, including many Hungarian dishes. The space has a cozy and dark feel to it with brick walls and a large wooden bar. If you’re in the Deep Ellum area, I highly recommend checking this place out!
There ya have it! 5 places I’ve visited this summer that stuck out for their delicious food and drinks. What are some of your favorite places to go? Where do you escape the heat?
Until next time,
