Good Lordy, the rain refuses to desist.
I love a good rainy day, but I admit, they make me want to brush off all responsibilities and curl up on the couch with a cup of tea and a good book. I might have done that on Tuesday. Oops. It’s just so hard to accomplish anything when the skies are gray, and the wind is cold.
Jimmy, probably a good idea to never move me to the Pacific North West. I’ll become a professional book reader and be one with the couch. MAN, if only that were a job!
Anywho, since it is cold, gray and dreary, I thought I’d brighten up your day with my Thursday Treasures! (I just made that title up) Basically, it’s five things I’m loving this week, that I think you might love as well. Who knows. I tried.
I don’t know what it is about this song by Old Dominion, but I am obsessed with it. I play it on repeat in the car, kitchen, vacuuming, you name it. It’s a little melancholy, a little sexy, and a lot catchy. Hit play! Love it!
Holy moly, where do I start with An American Marriage by Tayari Jones? It tells the story of Roy and Celestial, a couple on the verge of individual success living in Atlanta, Georgia. They are essentially newlyweds, only one year in when Roy is arrested and sentenced to 12 years in prison for a crime he did not commit. Roy, understandably, does not know how to be alone in prison, his world wrecked, his life irrevocably changed. He clings to Celestial, who in turn, clings to Andre, her childhood best friend and Roy’s best man at their wedding. But what happens when Roy’s sentence is overturned after 5 years and he wants to come home?
What I loved so much about the book is the author’s voice. Each chapter is told from a different character’s perspective. Ms. Jones beautifully crafted each person so that you seamlessly alternate between different worlds. Each character is complex and likable but flawed. Neither Celestial, Roy or Andre are innocent, but you still turn the pages wondering how this messy triangle will sort itself out.
I felt like the book was a learning journey for myself as well. As a white woman, I will never know or understand the plight of growing up black in America. It opened my eyes even wider to prejudice, fear, and strength, and for that alone, I believe the book is worth the read. Plus, it’s an Oprah Book Club pick, so duh. Read it.
I made this skirt steak recipe last night and my goodness was it easy! That’s what we want during the week, am I right? Serve it up with some potatoes or wild rice and the veggie of your choice. Makes for a yummy and healthy meal.
Does anyone else have these notebooks from Studio Oh!? I love them! They have such pretty covers, and although the spine of the book is not coiled, they open perfectly flat. Anyone in love with notebooks knows how important this is. They have become close to my heart, as the first one I purchased contains almost every note and scribble pertaining to my first book.
A comfy shirt…
If you’re a t-shirt lover, you need to check out Homage! Their shirts are soooo soft and cozy. They carry a wide variety of sports and college shirts. Most of their shirts I would consider unisex, but they do have a section just for women. You may know my love for all things Olympics, and I’m quite sad they’re coming to an end. Today, their Olympic shirt section is 40% off, including the one I’m wearing in the picture below (Yes, they have USA shirts).
There you have it! What are some of your favorite things this week?
Let me know!
Until next time,
